Point of View

The 4th grade did a Language Arts lesson recently on point-of-view. They were grouped with partners and asked to put on different glasses representing different characters of varying ages and interests. The goal was to view the world through someone else's eyes.Through this activity, students became more aware and respectful of the opinions and feelings of others.

A Thanksgiving Celebration!

The 4th Grade is getting ready for an Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving Celebration.  The class mothers helped the students bake cornbread and sugar cookies in the shape of turkeys.  They had a great time mixing the batter, rolling out the dough, and using the cookie cutters!

They can't wait until Thanksgiving week to eat their goodies and party!

4th Grade Poetry

The 4th graders memorized the poem The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.  For fun, some children choreographed the poem in rap style!

The Road Not Taken

By Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Beach Ball Book Reports!

The 4th Graders read Newbery Award winning books. Instead of writing a report, we played a beach ball game.  Questions were written on the ball, and students answered questions about their books as they threw the beach ball around the classroom.  Fun!

The Annual Egg Drop

The HAMC held its annual egg/parachute drop this week! After learning some key elements of physics the 4th and 5th grade students put their knowledge to the test! The 4th grade students each packaged an egg to be dropped from the top of the school. The objective was to protect the egg from cracking on impact! The 5th grade students created aerodynamic boxes to be dropped from the top of the school. The objective was to create the box that stays in the air the longest.

Who owns NJ?!

The 4th graders had a debate on the ownership of land in NJ during the Colonial Days. Each student wrote a paragraph about their beliefs on the best claim to the land in the New World.  Some students felt the Native Americans, the Lenni Lenape Indians, had the best claim to the land of NJ because they lived there for 12,000 years. Others felt the Colonists had the best claim because they actually bought the land from the Lenape and lived on the land. And others felt that the Proprietors in England, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, had the best claim because they received the land as a gift from the Duke of York and King George. The 3rd grade was invited in to the class to listen to the debate and vote for the winner. All debaters did an excellent job representing their views.

The winner was the Lenape Indians!
