Who owns NJ?!

The 4th graders had a debate on the ownership of land in NJ during the Colonial Days. Each student wrote a paragraph about their beliefs on the best claim to the land in the New World.  Some students felt the Native Americans, the Lenni Lenape Indians, had the best claim to the land of NJ because they lived there for 12,000 years. Others felt the Colonists had the best claim because they actually bought the land from the Lenape and lived on the land. And others felt that the Proprietors in England, Lord Berkeley and Sir George Carteret, had the best claim because they received the land as a gift from the Duke of York and King George. The 3rd grade was invited in to the class to listen to the debate and vote for the winner. All debaters did an excellent job representing their views.

The winner was the Lenape Indians!
